View Full Version : February 2009 Car of the Month - 3zowner

ChicagoZ.com : What got you hooked to the 280z that you ended up purchasing it?

3Zowner : I was looking for a new toy. I had a 64 Skylark 2 door hardtop with a 455 BB and between gas and tickets it cost me more to maintain it than wanting it anymore, that was my High School car. The 76 Z popped up at a car show and I fell in love with its body lines that I got rid of the Buick and bought the Z…in 1986 it was ten years old had 45k miles on it, had a turbo and was nicely customized for the time… I actually traded 10 brand new vintage 1967 Hotwheels for the money to pay for my Z at $6500.

ChicagoZ.com : What action does your 280z mostly see? drag, autox, road race, show car, weekend car, and/or daily driver...

3Zowner : I guess its more of a weekend car and show car. I can’t park it anywhere without worrying what someone might do to it. I have so much money, time and personal feeling into the car that I have to buy another Z just to drive a Z more. I did put more than 4000 miles on it in the 2008 season so I’m not afraid to drive it. It took me 4 years to do the modifications that everyone sees the car today but it was really worth the wait, besides I have lots more Z’s to drive when I don’t drive this one…

ChicagoZ.com : Any performance specs? 1/4 mile@mph, whp/wtorq, track times...

3Zowner : Never had to worry about taking it out onto a track to see how fast its going or how fast it is…It’s a straight six punch to a 3.0 motor with triple weber’s, header, straight flow exhaust, shortened intake…the engine makes the car hit 160 mph at 4000 rpm. It drives as nice as it looks, smokes a bit thanks to no CAT and will get a surprise this year for more HP and torque if I can afford to do it. Otherwise I’ll be finishing the stroker block for the new season…

ChicagoZ.com : What other modifications are you planning on doing to the 280z, if any? Whether it's performance, handling, appearance, and/or sound system....

3Zowner : I'll probably do some suspension mods over the winter, I’ve purchased tokiko adjustable struts, Eibach springs, Billet A-Arms, energy suspension bushings, adjustable tension rods, stroker diesel crankshaft, new forged dished pistons, triple 44mm mikuni carbs, new MOMO Trek steering wheel, under hood lights and new sound system to be built by Project X, just to name a few mods for this winter of custom stuff for the Z. The paint will remain virtually unchanged this year…maybe just a 15 hour wax job by Chad to bring out its shine better…I also have some great plans for the new acquisition some of ChicagoZ has seen the 70 240z #1382 in its original form and its getting quite a few upgrades to bring it into this century without ruining its flavor…

Custom Baby Blue pearl paint w/7 coats of clear and ghosted tribal flame in multiple colors of purple, green and orange that look silver on cloudy days
Front fenders are welded to the chassis to form a seamless body line under the hood (no bolt holes), also the headlight buckets and fenders have been welded together to also improve the body lines of the car.
The car had a 70’s style cheesy looking twin-top sunroof, we took a clean roof from a donor car and welded it to the existing car…looks as good as new
Fiberglass cowl inducted hood
Vintage original unique DOBI whale tail, actually made from the same material the original surf boards from the early 70’s were made with…
Front and rear body detail MSA fiberglass bumpers, we put safety in mind and custom made bumper inserts that fit inside the fiberglass bumpers.
16” Konig Monsoons w/ Cooper tires
Twin chrome retro style bullet side mirrors
Hella headlights
JDM style clear marker lights on all 4 corners and clear front turn signals
Custom tinted glass with the same tribal flame design in the paint
350Z emblems on the rear quarters, license plate frame and horn button
The interior is pretty much original, dash has some minor blemishes and this winter it will get a full set of AutoMeter white face gauges to complete the look
MOMO steering wheel, custom blue shiftknob, carbonfiber console inlay, suede headliner, and the sound system complete with ALPINE head unit and 2 10 inch MA subwoofers give it a really nice sound.
Seats and other pieces of the interior are in mint original condition as you would find in 1976…
L28 straight six bored .30 over with forged flat top pistons, displacement from2800cc to 3100cc. 10.5 to 1 compression. N42 head with a mild street cam and 3 angle valve job, engine was balanced and blueprinted. It has a 8 quart racing oil pan under it and a MSA 6 to 1 jethot coated header with a 2.5 inch exhaust running to a DTM stainless muffler…I also installed a set of triple weber carbs with K&N filters to complete the performance package and helps with the sound to make it sound like a V8 when I pull up to Z functions…

fixed that little runnin rich problem...

I think I was getting high between your car and the other black 240z that was in front of me during the video cruise.

I think we just need to go to salvation army and pick up a really ugly blazer and put a chicago z logo on it for COTM.

02-11-2009, 11:42 AM
